LIFE Training
L
ife Directed: God’s curriculum for life is in the midst of it, not
around it. Life is never a distraction from the discipleship work of
the church, but is the essence of it. If life is interfering with our
discipleship plans, how do we change our approach to
Discipleship. When, if ever, is it appropriate and helpful to ask
them to change their life to meet our plans?
I
ntegrated: Our diffi culty is that we live in a segmented culture
living compartmentalized lives. Somehow discipleship has to
reintegrate our lives under the headship of Christ. How do we
encourage people to live under Jesus headship at all times? How
do we help people fi gure out what that even looks like in their
various spheres with which we have no connection?
F
aith based: It’s not about behavior or about the way we think
even, but it is about faith. Trusting God rather than fi guring it all
out. How do we assess faith? How do we build faith?
E
difying means building. Our discipleship should partner with
God’s work in building people up. We are told Truth in Love is
part of the how. How do we use authority to build up rather then
control or tear down?
Use the above acronym or create your own articulation: Then
discuss with your staff (if you want help doing this, we can do a
Big Ideas retreat for leaders)
How does our current training mirror this? Where does it not?
What sacred cows do we need to consider slaughtering. What
new approaches do we need to consider. What must we give up
in order to fi nd a more LIFE centered approach.
How do we articulate this vision of Discipleship to our people?
How does doctrine fi t in with all this?
What does a Disciple look like? How will we assess progress or
lack thereof without stumbling into self-righteous judgements in
your community? How will you avoid the drift towards unanimity
of behavior and through, versus unity of faith and pursuit?
What does a Thriving discipleship community look like in your
church?
How will you articulate this vision of discipleship, this strategy of
assessment and this picture of the community, clearly, regularly,
and frequently?
