He cried. . .

Ludwig was the 5th child of 7. Only he and
his younger brothers Kaspar and Nikola
grew to
be an adult

Ludwig was named after his grandfather,
Ludwig Van Beethoven who was a singer,
conductor and a great musician.
Grandfather conducting whole class as symphony.
Grandfather says, “OK everyone, again from the top!”

Ludwig’s Father, Johann, was a singer and
music teacher.
Father teaching a bad singer to sing.
Father, “O.K., try singing like this.”
Demonstrates how to sing Twinkle, Twinkle.
“Now you give it a try.”.
Father puts hands over ears as singer sings poorly.
Singer says, ”How was that?”
Father says, “We’ll have to work on it.”
Ludwig’s
mom
worked as a servant.
Two students as a couple at a dinner table ring bell to summon servant. Mom
says, “I’m coming!” carrying serving tray with
a pile of plain pasta
.
Maria trips and spills the food all over the couple.
One of the couple says, “Oh, Maria!”
The other couple says, “Maria, try to be more careful!”
Ludwig began to play the keyboard when he
was 4 years old. The violin when he was 5 years
old. Every day he practiced 1 hour on the
keyboard and 1 hour on the violin. When he was
a child he wrote a
song
that was so
hard
that he
could not play it until he was an adult.
Young Beethoven tries to play the song he wrote, then asks father, “Can
you
play this for me dad?”
Father says, “Sure Ludwig!”

7 years old. His dad
said that Ludwig was only 6 so that Mozart’s
dad would think Ludwig was a
great
pianist like
Mozart who also gave concerts when he was a
child.

Ludwig replies with fi ngers showing seven fi ngers

Father puts one of Ludwig's fi ngers down to show six fi ngers and says “He is
only six”.
When Ludwig was 7 he would sneak away to
play the piano when his father was busy so he
could play the piano the way he wanted, and
play the
music
he heard in his head.
Mom, Dad, and Ludwig, and two brothers
say goodnight to each other and

to sleep

Beethoven says, "Goodnight John Boy!"
Ludwig wakes up and plays the piano.

While Ludwig is playing his father wakes up and pulls on his ear saying,

12 some of his
music was
being published and he had his fi rst job as an
organist.
When Ludwig was
14 he was an
assistant court organist. When
he
was 16 he
went to study with Mozart.
