Pursuing Premier!
Greetings Roadrunners and families,
As I write this today there are snow flurries outside my
window
,
and the students who are out at recess are running
around trying to capture snowflakes on
their tongues and anxiously waiting to
hear that they get to go home for the
day due to snow. I heard one
kindergartener say he couldn’t wait to go
home and build a snow fort! I am pretty
sure that isn’t going to happen today, but
I love the excitement and joy that comes with snow flurries.
We had a wonderful turn out for our fi rst Take Your Parent
to School Day! There were about 250 parents and
grandparents and other important family members who
attended and got to experience a little bit of what it is like
to be an elementary student these days. I spent time talking
with parents before they visited their students’ classroom
about some of the ways school is different than it used to
be. We talked about problem solving, critical thinking, and
meta-cognition.
Problem solving and critical thinking skills are important
because we are raising 21st Century learners who need to
know how to use their thinking skills to solve problems in

RSD's
Student-of-the-Month
South Ridge is pleased to select
Blakeley Gardner,
4th grade, for
our February Student of the Month.
Blakeley was nominated by her
teacher, Karen Moses. This is what
Mrs. Moses had to say about Blakeley:
"
Blakeley quietly looks for ways to
help those around her and then sets
about doing so in a gentle, caring
manner. She truly has a servant’s
mentality. Kindness radiates from her
eyes. Academically, Blakeley listens
intently and diligently works to make
the most of every minute at school.
She is extremely responsible, and it is
evident that she is seeking to do the
very best she can on every assignment.
Blakeley is respectful, polite, cheerful,
generous, unselfi sh, and humble. She
is extremely deserving of recognition
for her efforts academically and her
efforts to serve others."

new ways. This isn’t the kind of learning we were asking of
students 20 years ago, but it is now. As our students get
older they will be asked to think in more complex ways and
to be more flexible in their thinking
,
so we have to lay the
foundation for that now.
We also talked about meta-cognition. Meta cognition is
thinking about your thinking. So we ask students to explain
their thinking in identifying the way they solved a problem
and reflecting at the end of a lesson on the process they
went through to come up with an answer. The current brain
research tells us that metacognition is crucial for students as
they learn because it allows the new information learned to
attach to other learning in the brain
,
and this makes it more
accessible later. I could go on and on about the importance
of these three concepts, but I am sure you are already tired
of reading about it.
Bring Your Parent to School Day is going to be a tradition at
our school, so if you did not get a chance to participate this
year, I hope you will consider attending in the future. The
students were so excited to have their people at school
,
and
it was so fun to see parents learning alongside their children.
Miss Paradis even brought her dad to school with her! What
a clever spin on the day!
Our students continue to grow and learn new things every
day
.
It is so incredible to see how much they have changed
since the beginning of the school year. This second half of
the school year we are focusing on social emotional learning
as a whole school, beginning this month with belly
breathing, to help students learn better self-regulation skills.
We are also learning about the brain and how the
hippocampus, amygdala, and pre-frontal cortex work
together to help us think and react to things around us. Be
sure to ask your students about these ideas!
Sincerely,
Jill Neyenhouse

Hello Roadrunner Families,
Reading is a special kind of magic. When we read, we are magically transported into a world
where anything is possible, and we escape our reality for a moment. Conversely, reading can
also keep us grounded in reality as we learn about our world and our place in it. Reading
helps us grow into loving, responsible, competent people. All this--for free!
Parents have the most continuous and lasting influence on their children. Did you know that
the same conditions you provided to help your child learn to talk are what will teach them to
read too? Surrounding them with language (print). Talking to them during feedings,
dressings, bathings...you never stopped talking (reading)! Even though you know they can't
understand the words, you kept talking (reading) knowing that someday your child would
attach meaning to them. When they tried saying (reading) words, you didn't scold them for
being wrong, but praised them for their efforts.
Here are some simple ways to make reading a part of your home life:
•
Keep books handy
•
Choose books your child likes
•
Get a library card and visit the library regularly to provide variety
•
Read at bedtime
•
Don't panic if you miss a day
•
Read 15 minutes a day
•
Talk about the story as you read
•
Get others involved (e.g. babysitters, childcare provider, big brothers/sisters,
grandparents, aunts/uncles)
•
Let them see that everyone fi nds pleasure in reading!
I think this poem by Strickland Gillilan says it best...
You may have tangible wealth untold:
Caskets of jewels an coffers of gold.
Richer than I you can never be--
I had a mother who read to me.
Happy reading to you and yours!
Things to consider...
