Tepee
A cone-shaped tent made from wooden poles and buffalo
skins.
Tribe
An American Indian group with its own leaders and
lands.
Travois
A device made of two poles fastened to a dog’s harness,
used to carry possessions.
Culture
The customs, arts, and social institutions of a group of
people.
Council
A group that makes laws.
Artifact
Any object made by people in the past.
Palisade
A wall made of sharpened tree trunks to protect a village
from enemies or wild animals.
Legend
A story handed down over time.
Wampum
Beads made from cut and polished seashells, used to keep
records, send messages to other tribes, barter for goods,
or give as gifts.
Weir
A fence-like structure built across a river in order to trap
fi sh.

A loosely united group of governments working together.
Shaman
A religious leader.
Wigwam
A round, bark-covered American Indian shelter.
Ceremony
A celebration to honor a cultural or religious event.
