The Importance of the Divine Mercy Image
The image of the Merciful Jesus is one of the most
recognisable
images of
Christ in the world. It is unique not only because it is
recognised
as such,
but also because it arose from the recommendation of Jesus himself, who
appeared in this form to St. Faustina on February 22, 1931 in the convent
of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in Płock. On that occasion, St. Faustina
wrote in her Diary:
“In the evening, when I was in my cell, I saw the Lord
Jesus clothed in a white garment. One hand [was] raised in the
gesture of blessing, the other was touching the garment at the breast.
From beneath the garment, slightly drawn aside at the breast, there
were emanating two large rays, one red, the other pale. (…) After a
while, Jesus said to me, paint an image according to the pattern you
see, with the signature: Jesus, I trust in You. I desire that this image
be venerated, fi rst in your chapel, and [then} throughout the
world,”
(Diary #47). Christ also made promises to those who would
venerate this image:
“I promise that the soul that will venerate this
image will not perish. I also promise victory over [its] enemies already
here on earth, especially at the hour of death. I Myself will defend it as
My own glory
,”
(Diary #48).
The image of the Merciful Jesus occupies a central place in our church –
the Sanctuary of Divine Mercy. It is placed in the sanctuary above the
Tabernacle. Every day the faithful look at the face of the Merciful Lord,
participating in the liturgy and praying the Chaplet of Divine Mercy before
every Holy Mass. The words on the image, Jesus I trust in You, express
great trust in Jesus, and are uttered by the faithful many times personally or
as a community, as well as in various hymns which give praise and honour
to the Merciful Jesus.

NOTEBOOK II, 238
564 On the feast day of the Immaculate Conception of the
Mother of God, during the Holy Mass, I head the rustling of
garments and saw the most holy Mother of God in a most
beautiful radiance. Her white garment was girdled with a blue
(32) sash. She said to me, you give Me great joy when you
adore The Holy Trinity for the graces and privileges which were
accorded Me, And She immediately disappeared.
NOTEBOOK I, 295
Yes, I will be with you always, if you always remain a little child
and fear nothing. As I was your beginning here, so I will also be
your end. Do not rely on creatures, even in the smallest things,
because this displeases Me. I want to be alone in your soul. I
will give light and strength to your soul, and you will learn from
my representative that I am in you, and your uncertainty will
vanish like mist before the rays of the sun.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will
give you rest” (Matthew 11:28)
“At three o’clock, implore My mercy, especially for poor
sinners: and, if only for a brief moment, immerse yourself in My
Passion, particularly in My abandonment at the moment of
agony. This is the hour of great mercy for the whole world. I will
allow you to enter into My mortal sorrow. In this hour, I will
refuse nothing to the soul that makes a request of Me in virtue
of My Passion…” (Diary, 1320)
We strongly encourage you to visit our Shrine every day and to
private prayer in front of The Image of Merciful Jesus.
