The Racqueteers
Summer of 2018
SEASON SUMMARY
In reflecting upon the 2018 summer of Racqueteers cricket, my prevailing
thought is of how we 'bookended' our season with two fantastic batting
performances.
In early May, our season opener was on the sublime and hallowed turf of
Meads, Winchester College, where we produced a flawless display with the
bat; all our batsmen retiring without the loss of a wicket setting up an
emphatic victory. Then to conclude our cricket in September, in the longer
form of the game, we posted an impressive club record innings total against
a competitive but affable Swanmore team.
In between these two memorable games we enjoyed success with four more strong wins and three
losses; a tightly-fought loss at home to St Giles CC could so easily have swung our way. Our loss at
Easton Wanderers was the only match where I felt, for some reason, we didn't really perform to our
ability.
However, the biggest disappointment of the season has to be the games we lost due to the weather -
the King Alfred Trophy and at The Vagabonds - as well as the sadly cancelled fi xtures against Crawley,
Warwick School and Tichborne Park.
Despite these 'missed matches', we enjoyed a memorable summer of cricket with games at such
bucolic venues as Goodwood (where the home team had won all their matches before our visit!), The
White Hunters at Brockwood Park and the Holt where we broke with tradition of tying the match
with an excellent win! All perfect places to play our cricket in the long hot summer of 2018.
I could ramble on about the details of individual performances with bat and ball throughout the
season (thankfully we have our excellent & prosaic match reports for that!) suffi ce to say, if you'll
indulge me a moment, that it's been a joy to play another terrifi c Racqueteers season and a great
privilege to be captain of such a splendid group of friends.
Here's to another exciting and full season in 2019!

PRESIDENT
’
S MESSAGE
I echo Mike F
’
s comments in his Season Summary; despite rather too many
missed matches, it
’
s been another great season.
We welcomed two new players to The Racqueteers this season - father/son
combo Edmund and Julien - and look forward to having Alex Gulliford (++?) in
the squad in 2019, despite causing a thumb-tremblingly awful WhatsApp
hiatus in response to one of Mr Newcombe
’
s inappropriate postings! I hope, too, that we
’
ll see more
of David H next year now that his knee has been repaired and he
’
ll soon be back to being the
perfectly-honed physical specimen that we all know and love.
It
’
s been disappointing that we, yet again, have failed to go on tour! It
’
s something that we
’
ll discuss
this evening but I
’
d really like to think that we can fi nally make a success of this in 2019
–
there are a
number of potential options and I know it would be a lot of fun.
Winter training
–
both in the nets at Dummer and indoor at River Park - was really well attended and
we
’
ll be running the same during this coming winter. I
’
ve been in touch with Aussie Stu and I
’
m
delighted to report that he
’
s signed himself up for an intense period of catching practice during this
winter, too
…
We don
’
t have a lot of money in the coffers, although income from match fees and subs does cover
our costs. We will have to have our own insurance from next season (WCC will no longer be
offering this as part of the pitch fee at North Walls) so we may well have to look at increasing match
fees and/or subs a little in 2019. If we are to buy more team kit a new sponsorship deal will be
necessary, however.
Huge thanks, as ever, go to Lol for his impeccable scoring once again this season, and to Gaurav for
the wonderful stats that he produces
–
and, indeed, for putting together the end of season stats and
annual report. Thanks, too, to our match reporters
–
Mike F and Guy (++??).
I messaged after our last match of the season how full of pride I was for The Racqueteers; with a team
of only 9 players we put on a fabulous performance and were victorious over Swanmore
–
and their
legendary slogger. We are a great little club with loads of talent amongst a terrifi c bunch of guys. I
am full of pride - without prejudice, of course.

MAN OF THE SEASON
The 2018 Man of the Season has played in every match this
season. He has scored 303 runs, including the highest score of the
season (91) against Swanmore; he
’
s hit the most sixes (7), and an
amazing 29 fours.
He
’
s taken 11 wickets in his 26 overs bowled, with an excellent
run rate of 4.54.
Amidst all this cricket, he and his family have found time to make the wise move from Romsey to
Winchester, and his great work at Southampton university has been rewarded with a professorship.
He is The Professor: a great all-rounder and an all-round great guy. The Man of the Season for 2018
is Professor Jack Corbett!
