To use warships to prevent other ships from entering or
leaving a harbor.
Transcontinental
Railroad
A railroad that crosses the North American continent,
linking the Atlantic and Pacifi c coasts.
Quarter
To provide or pay for housing.
Invest
To buy something in the hope that it will be worth more
in the future.
Congress
A formal meeting of government representatives who
have the authority to make laws.
Pony Express
A system of carrying mail between Missouri and
California.
Petition
A signed request made to an offi cial person or
organization.
Overland Mail Act
An 1857 act passed by the U.S. Congress that called for
mail to be carried by stagecoach in an enclosed wagon
pulled by a team of horses between the Mississippi River
and San Francisco.
Minutemen
A member of the Massachusetts colony militia who could
quickly be ready to fi ght the British.
Way Station
Stopping, resting, and repair places along the Overland
Mail Route.
Revolution
A sudden, great change, such a as the overthrow of an
established government.

A form of energy from electrons or protons.
Commander in Chief
A person who is in control of all the armed forces of a
nation.
