Public School
A school that is free to students, supported by tax dollars,
and run by a government agency.
Reservation
Land set aside by the government for use by American
Indians.
Private School
A school that is funded and run by individuals or groups
instead of by a government agency.
Assimilate
To adopt the culture traits of a population or group.
Generation
A group of people born and living at about the same time.
Adopt
To take on or assume such as an attitude, method, or
position.
Energy Crisis
A problem that happens when there is not enough power
to meet demand.
Indian Removal Act
An act signed by president Jackson that Indians east of
the Mississippi River had to give up their lands for lands
west of the Mississippi River in the Indian Territory.
Long-Term Planning
Making choices that are based on how they will affect life
in the future.
The Trail of Tears
The 800 mile path that American Indians traveled on
between the southeastern United States to the Indian
Territory in what is now Oklahoma.
Conservation
The protection and wise use of natural resources.
The Seminole Wars
Three wars in the 1800’s between the United States and
the Seminole Indians of Florida.
Renewable
Something that can be made again by nature or people.
Sequoyah
A Cherokee Indian who created a written alphabet for his
people’s language.
Nonrenewable
Something that cannot be made again by nature of by
people.
John Marshall
The Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court
which in 1832 ruled that the state of Georgia could not
take the Cherokee lands.
Pollution
Anything that makes a natural resource dirty or unsafe to
use.
Protest
A statement of action expressing disapproval of or
objection to something.
Defi cit
The result of spending more money than is available.
Spanish Florida
An area that included present day Florida and more land
around it that was owned by Spain from 1513 to 1819.
