Pursuing Premier!
Greetings Roadrunners and families,
Spring is on the way! Thank goodness!! I am ready for some
warmer temperatures and sunshine. Our Road
r
unners have
been so busy at school, and we have had some fun events in
the last few weeks. We celebrated Dr. Seuss with our Green
Eggs and Ham breakfast for fi rst graders, and second
graders received a free book during our PAL Literacy event.
They even got to check out the Clark County Sheriff’s
Offi ce boat and the CSI truck.
This month we are focused on fi nding joy in our school.
Students in most classes are participating in the Hand to
Heart project creating cards for children at Randall
Children’s Hospital. We are spreading joy and helping
students to develop empathy for others. Also, their artwork
is spectacular!
We are celebrating the opening of the Parent Center on
March 15th before the Family Movie Night. The Parent
Center is a cozy nook in the lobby of the school where there
are resources for parents, a library of books that can be
checked out, and some comfy chairs for perusing all the
good materials available. I hope to see you at the Ribbon
Cutting ceremony on the 15th at 5:30. Emily Crawford and
David Payette have worked tirelessly on this project for our
families, and it is exciting to see the results!

RSD's
Student-of-the-Month
America
was nominated by
her teacher, Mr. Clarke. This
is what Mr. Clarke said about
America:
"
America knows that she can
keep trying even when things
get hard. Her true joy of
learning is evident every day.
She puts in great effort and gets
great results in her school work.
She is kind to her peers beyond
expectations. Her smile is a
signature move that she uses
over and over to greet peers and
staff alike.
"
Principal's Corner, cont.
Many of you may not have a reason to go to Building B
because your child is not a 3rd or 4th grader, but if you get a
chance, please check out the exciting mural we are having
installed. A local artist, Richard Moody, is donating his time
and expertise to create a mural that depicts Mt. St. Helens
in a triptych. The fi rst panel is prior to the eruption on May
20, 1980, the second, during the eruption, and the third, as
it looks now in 2019. Our 3rd and 4th graders were able to
share their ideas and give input on the mural. It is a
wonderful addition to our school and should be completed
by Spring Break.
One of the ways I try to bring more joy to school, is by
telling a joke in the morning during announcements. The
students and teachers have started sharing their jokes with
me, and I love starting the day off with a little laugh. We all
work so hard every day, students and staff, and I believe if
we can bring a little levity into the day, it makes it all the
better.
The remainder of the school year will go so quickly, and
before we know it, June will arrive. Our students continue
to grow and improve daily, and I am excited to see how far
they have come by the end of the school year.
Sincerely,
Jill Neyenhouse

Serafi na has never had a reason to disobey her pa
and venture
beyond the grounds of the Biltmore Estate. There's plenty to explore
in Mr. and Mrs. Vanderbilt's vast and opulent home, but she must
take care to never be seen. None of the rich folk upstairs know that
Serafi na exists; she and her pa, the estate's maintenance man, have
lived in the basement for as long as Serafi na can remember. She has
learned to prowl through the darkened corridors at night, to sneak
and hide, using the mansion's hidden doors and secret passageways.
But when children at the estate start disappearing, only
she
knows
the clues to follow.

Students who participate can choose a bag of Skittles, a prize from our prize bin, or a
book charm for their book-charm keychain.

Hello Roadrunner Families,
As you’re reading this, you probably aren’t thinking about what your brain is doing in order to
make sense of the words, nor the way you learned how to do so. How we learn to read, or not, is
no longer a mystery thanks to science. We can actually track why strong readers read, while others
struggle, and we know the critical part that early language development plays in it. What
researchers call a “reading-ready brain” begins with language acquisition, something children
develop outside the classroom
--
with their parents
(Burns, 2017)
. Here are some specifi c ways you
can help your child develop a “reading-ready” brain:
Phonemic awareness
- the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate sounds.
Activity
: Take a few minutes with your child to close your eyes and listen closely to all the sound
s
you hear.
Help your child put words to the sounds to identify them.
Phonics
- understanding that letters have sounds attached to them.
Activity
: In your daily activities, point out letters as you see them and say the sounds. Go on a letter hunt
with your child, and see how many of a certain letter you can spot and say.
Fluency
- the ability to read accurately and quickly.
Activity
: How many times can you and your child spot a particular word throughout the day? Use high
frequency words depending on where you will be spending time, for instance at the grocery store you can
look for words like food, fruit, dairy, meat, etc.
Vocabulary
- a strong vocabulary is vital to word recognition and comprehension.
Activity
: introduce a new word, and see how many times you and your child can use it, or catch someone
else using it, throughout the day.
Memory
- being able to retain information and ideas is critical to reading.
Activity
: have your child retell the story you read last night, or one of their favorite stories, while you’re
riding in the car.
Consider this...
Visit our Parent Center
in the lobby and check out parenting books and books to read with your
child that are designed to aid social and emotional growth.
Donations of books
are always welcomed and needed. Please drop off books between 9:00 and
3:00 on weekdays. Thank you for continuing to help us meet our student's reading needs!

Volunteer-of-the-Month
April Juretzka,
PTA member and parent of
second grader
Alexander Juretzka
is our March volunteer-of-
the-month. Ms. Crawford says about April,
"
She has shown incredible gifts with our
library
window displays
all year
, but she has
really
outdone herself
with the
new
library display inside the library. I gave her a concept, and she took it and went beyond my
imagination. The display
is
already having a positive impact on our students. One example is that I was
getting ready to read a story to a kindergarten class when one of my students shouted out, "What happened in
the window? " The kids were so excited, we
had to
stop
and d
o
a little tour.
Although I've always had a
display in that window, u
ntil now I have never had a student comment on
it
. Her work is making a big
difference. I can't thank her enough! I plan to use the display as a teaching tool and literature promotion
device
.
"
Thank you for all you do April!
A proud moment when the new display inside
the library is fi nally complete!

Mr. Clarke gets a tie!
Crochet Club completed their fi rst joint
project--a tie for Mr. Clarke. When he
mentioned in passing that he would wear a
tie if we crocheted him one, he probably did
not expect to really get one. Each member
contributed a section of the tie, and Ms.
Crawford crocheted them all together. Mr.
Clarke couldn't resist giving a tie-tying
lesson when we presented him with it.
