Pursuing Premier!
Greetings Roadrunners and families,
Spring is here! The school year is winding down and it is
hard to believe we are just weeks away from the school year
being done. In third and fourth grade students are getting
ready to take the Smarter Balance Assessment in May. The
standardized testing can be stressful for students and for
teachers.
While standardized testing allows us, as a school, to
examine our own practices and effectiveness in regards to
student learning, it is in no way a reflection of the qualities
of your child. Our South Ridge students are smart, kind,
funny, courageous, silly, loving, compassionate, and great
learners. They are not the numbers of their test results.
We have a talent show happening in May and I am so
excited to see what our students are do! The performance
will happen on May 17th. We think it will be a great
celebration in between our testing weeks for 3rd and 4th
graders. I think we have some talented students.
This is my favorite time of year because I love seeing
everything in bloom. Daffodils and tulips and lilacs make
me so happy and from the window of my offi ce I can see the
daffodils and tulips in bloom. Spring is a time for renewal
and growth, and gives us an opportunity to start fresh in our
lives. I hope you take a few moments in between soccer

RSD's
Student-of-the-Month
Connor
was nominated by his
teacher, Mrs. Moses.
This is what she said about
Connor:
“Connor comes in every day just
excited to be here! He has a spring in
his step and a constant smile on his
face! He looks for ways to help his
classmates, whether it be helping
them one on one with a math skill, or
calling their attention back to a
lesson, or reminding a student gently
about expectations.
Connor is very focused and is an
active, enthusiastic participant in
every lesson or activity. He works very
hard to always do high quality work.
Connor is truly a person of integrity!
He has a kind and generous heart. He
is welcoming and friendly to all and is
aware of others and their feelings or
diffi culties. Connor is a fun and
enjoyable kid to be around! It
brightens every day with his
respectful, outgoing personality and
engaging smile!”
Principal's Corner, cont.
matches, baseball games, and all of the other activities you
are busy with to smell the cut grass and the sweet scent
from the blooming flowers. Share the joy of the spring
renewal with your kids and enjoy the coming sunshine.
Sincerely,
Jill Neyenhouse

Book-of-the-month!
Ms. Crawford's picks
for this month's reading.
It's not easy being seen.
Especially when you're NOT
like everyone else. Especially when what sets you apart
is YOU.
Sometimes we squish ourselves to fi t in. We shrink.
Twist. Bend. Until -- ! -- a friend shows the way to
endless possibilities.
In this bold and highly visual book, an emphatic but
misplaced exclamation point learns that being different
can be very exciting! Period.

Luke has never been to school
. He’s never had a birthday party, or
gone to a friend’s house for an overnight. In fact, Luke has never had
a friend.
Luke is one of the shadow children, a third child forbidden by the
Population Police. He’s lived his entire life in hiding, and now, with a
new housing development replacing the woods next to his family’s
farm, he is no longer even allowed to go outside.
Then, one day Luke sees a girl’s face in the window of a house
where he knows two other children already live. Finally, he’s met a
shadow child like himself. Jen is willing to risk everything to come out
of the shadows–does Luke dare to become involved in her
dangerous plan? Can he afford not to?

Hello Roadrunner Families,
I always know when it's spring because we start to take note of the sunny days and hear people
remarking on the fact that the sun is out. During the hot spells in August, I try to recall my
excitement on these days as I try to stay cool. This is a fun time of year for our third and fourth
grade students because we begin typing lessons, which culminate into fun typing races with each
other and with me. I start off by showing them the old, manual typewriter and explain how "people
used to do it in the old days" and what whiteout is for. They gain a new appreciation for the
Backspace and Delete buttons!
As we look forward to summer and sunshine, and we begin the countdown, there are a couple key
dates to keep in mind:
Last day for book checkout is Friday,
May 31st
All library books are due back by Monday,
June 3th
Fort Vancouver Library's Summer Reading Program starts June 15th!
This year's theme!
Consider this...
Visit our Parent Center
in the lobby and check out parenting books and books to read with your
child that are designed to aid social and emotional growth.
Donations of books
are always welcomed and needed. Please drop off books between 9:00 and
3:00 on weekdays. Thank you for continuing to help us meet our student's reading needs!

Current Events:
NED Show is yo-tastic!
On the 15 of April,
we had an assembly from The NED Show, where Hailey did
magic tricks with yo-yo's. NED stands for Never give up, Encourage others, and
Do your best. The NED show has used yo-yo tricks in school performance f
or
over 25 years
.
Students
were
told that
"
if they try yo-yoing, it’s important to
learn from mistakes and never give up
".
After the performance,
students were excited to buy
their own yo-yo's to try out the tricks they saw, which
they were able to do before school every morning that
week. A special area was set aside at recess for students to
practice.

Anxiety in Schools
A Presentation for Parents
By Kevin Ashworth, Cognitive Behavior Therapist
and Clinical Director of the NW Anxiety Institute
Thursday, April 25
6:00 pm
View Ridge Black Box
This fall, Ridgefi eld students were asked about feeling anxious and not being able to stop worrying
in the last two weeks:
40
%
of 8th graders
66
%
of 10th graders
61
%
of 12 graders
Anxiety and worry are common feelings among our Ridgefi eld students! Learn how to help your children, identify
signs of anxiety in kids, and manage expectations at home. We discuss the very important role of empathy and the
avoidance of over-accommodating anxiety in kids. The goal is to help students understand how avoidance coping is
not helpful and may even maintain anxiety over time. Learn about the use of electronic devices in the role of anxiety,
guilt, and shame.
