1- Oud - from agarwood - secreted from an aquilaria
tree that has been infected with mold. the tree forms its
own immune response from the attack secreting this
Oud oil that is distilled. The trees are almost extinct but
recently been used and cultivated for this resin. I have
been interested in it since my family is from morocco
and this oil is used in a lot of traditional
scents
and
incense from the middle east. In a way, its this immune
response that i’m focusing on because even with it the
tree has a few yrs to live before the mold totally
destroys the tree.
2- Moss - lichen are one of the oldest living things on
the planet, and mystics believed it holds the secrets to
the elixir of life since it has seen generations of
humanity come and go. it grows in colonies and parts
of it live and die but the moss itself still fi nds ways to
live on after parts have died almost like a starfi sh. Its
with this idea that the
scent
is also like a cure, an elixir
of life but life and death have a symbiotic relationship
that you can’t have one without the other.
A lot of the
scent
score
is developed with these
ideologies of these 2 living things almost meta
relational in terms of how life cycles are effected. The
2
scents
were given in complimentary, and J+P can tell
you the material changes it had on their performance
and production of this opera. It was given with the
intention of changing the psychic relationships between
them and their working process and in a way is the
start of the
scent
part of the opera.
The skin is one of the most porous and absorbed part
of our bodies, taking in things we don’t realize we are
part of - through our environment, stressors, and
experiences. Skin is the ultimate bottom, just like
scent
is the ultimate top - permeating everything spreading
itself to fi ll whatever container it is released into. Skin is
the ultimate membrane to cellular consciousness
because it is constantly absorbing its surroundings.
With that in mind, the idea of disease is a condition of
being, often starts without an awareness and only later
and in circumstances when we fi nd we can no longer
function the same do we realize something is wrong, or
we have gotten sick because it becomes a physical
manifestation. With that said, I gave them these
scents
to tune their cellular bodies to one another - the
scents
are complimentary - when they are used singularly they
have a different effect than when they are in proximity
to each other. And each others skin absorbs the other
scent
.
The
scents
are comprised of volatile organic
compounds which change over time, organic natural
essences from different parts of various plants related
to both Heartwood (Oud) and Moss.
With all this said, the
scent
has already been
disseminated, just like any disease. Whether its
understood or captured in a performance is to be
experienced in the actual performance. Its not just
smell but on a deeply connected experience that may
not be quantifi ed. Besides our bodies can only smell
things it is not accustomed to - i.e. when a
scent
is in
the air it usually can only be smelled for 15min before it
becomes the background to everything around it. The
audience will only fi nd out when the performance builds
and the room will be fi lled with a diffuse aroma coming
from the cast which are the host carriers of the
scent
.
The more cast members on stage the stronger the
smells diffused into the air, and through sweat,
humidity, warmth it grows.
At the end of the fi rst act the audience will be given
scented
cards, which when opened will diffuse into
whatever the surroundings the person so desires. I’m
thinking of this
scent
as an elixir of life, just like a
Descartes Duality. Because life and death are part of a
natural cycle which exists, its just time is the variable,
and if the
scent
can slow down time we can exist in a
moment for all eternity…
