The Racqueteers
Summer of 2019
SEASON SUMMARY
Starting with the King Alfred Trophy in early May and concluding at Swanmore in early
September we’ve enjoyed another fi ne long summer of Racqueteers’ cricket.
With splendid wins at the beautiful Brockwood Park, on the bucolic Holt ground and
the sublime Winchester College Meads, we’ve enjoyed great success on some of
Hampshire’s fi nest cricket grounds.
Add to this trip to Easton, Bentworth and Goodwood, I think you’ll agree, we certainly
pick some very lovely and picturesque places to play our beloved game. Easton was particularly notable, not only
because remarkably we had four members of the same family in the team that evening, but that play was halted for
some minutes after a pitch invasion by a cow that jumped the fence from the neighbouring fi eld!
With several close matches at home as well as some challenging away fi xtures, notably against The Vagabonds &
Swanmore, the Racqueteers’ spirit and camaraderie always shines through.
Looking ahead with the prospect of our own new pavilion at River Park (due to the tireless efforts of our esteemed
President) and the future looks bright for our club; it’s also been a great pleasure to welcome new faces to our fold in
2019.
Let’s not ramble on about individual performances and stats - we cover these in our full match reports - but it would
be remiss not to conclude by saying I hope you all agree that it’s been another thoroughly enjoyable Racqueteers’
season.
On a personal note it really is a privilege & great joy to be captain of such a splendid group of cricketing friends.
Here's to another exciting season in 2020!
Mike Fowkes, November 2019.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
I echo Mike F’s comments in his Season Summary; despite rather too many missed matches, it’s been
another great season.
We welcomed two new players to The Racqueteers this season - father/son
combo Edmund and Julien - and look forward to having Alex Gulliford (++?) in the
squad in 2019, despite causing a thumb-tremblingly awful WhatsApp hiatus in
response to one of Mr Newcombe’s inappropriate postings! I hope, too, that
we’ll see more of David H next year now that his knee has been repaired and
he’ll
soon be back to being the perfectly-honed physical specimen that we all know
and
love.
It’s been disappointing that we, yet again, have failed to go on tour! It’s
something that we’ll discuss this evening but I’d really like to think that we can fi nally make a success of this
in 2019 – there are a number of potential options and I know it would be a lot of fun.
Winter training – both in the nets at Dummer and indoor at River Park - was really well attended and we’ll
be running the same during this coming winter. I’ve been in touch with Aussie Stu and I’m delighted to
report that he’s signed himself up for an intense period of catching practice during this winter, too…
We don’t have a lot of money in the coffers, although income from match fees and subs does cover our
costs. We will have to have our own insurance from next season (WCC will no longer be offering this as
part of the pitch fee at North Walls) so we may well have to look at increasing match fees and/or subs a
little in 2019. If we are to buy more team kit a new sponsorship deal will be necessary, however.
Huge thanks, as ever, go to Lol for his impeccable scoring once again this season, and to Gaurav for the
wonderful stats that he produces – and, indeed, for putting together the end of season stats and annual
report. Thanks, too, to our match reporters – Mike F and Guy (++??).
I messaged after our last match of the season how full of pride I was for The Racqueteers; with a team of
only 9 players we put on a fabulous performance and were victorious over Swanmore – and their legendary
slogger. We are a great little club with loads of talent amongst a terrifi c bunch of guys. I am full of pride -
without prejudice, of course.

FAMILY OF THE SEASON
The 2018 Man of the Season has played in every match this season. He has scored 303 runs, including the
highest score of the season (91) against Swanmore; he’s hit the most
sixes (7), and an amazing 29 fours.
He’s taken 11 wickets in his 26 overs bowled, with an excellent run rate
of 4.54.
Amidst all this cricket, he and his family have found time to make the
wise move from Romsey to Winchester, and his great work at
Southampton university has been rewarded with a professorship.
He is The Professor: a great all-rounder and an all-round great guy.
The Man of the Season for 2018 is Professor Jack Corbett!
