County
A section of a state.
Manifest Destiny
The belief, shared by many Americans, that the United
States should one day stretch from the Atlantic Ocean to
the Pacifi c Ocean.
County Seat
A city where the main government offi ces of the county
are located.
Cession
Something that is given up, such as land.
Board of Supervisors
An elected group of people who govern a county.
Gold Rush
A sudden rush of new people to an area where gold has
been found.
Jury Trial
A trial in which a group of citizens decides whether a
person accused of a crime should be found guilty or not
guilty.
Forty-Niner
A gold seeker who arrived in California in 1849.
Municipal
Having to do with a city.
Industrial Revolution
The period of time during the 1700’s and 1800’s in which
machines took the place of hand tools to manufacture
goods.
City Manager
A person hired by a city council to run the city under the
direction of the city council.
Cotton Gin
A machine that removed seeds from cotton fi bers much
more quickly than workers could by hand.
Special District
A group set up to deal with a certain service or problem.
Interchangeable Parts
Identical copies of parts made by machines so that if one
part breaks, an identical one can be installed.
Regional Body
A group made up of people, usually from several cities or
counties, who work together to create a plan for a large
area.
Telegraph
A machine that used electricity to send messages over
wires.
Rancheria
Land in California set aside for American Indians.
Underground Railroad
A system of escape routes for enslaved people, leading to
free land.
Sovereign
Free and independent.
Mexican-American War
An invasion of Mexico by the United States Army from
1846-1848 in which the United States gained Texas and
what is now much of the southwestern states.
