The fi rst successful detonation of the atomic bomb was on July 16 1945.
After, everyone present realized how signifi cant this atomic bomb would
be. It had the power to change the world, and brought the beginning of a
new time.
It all started with the discovery of splitting the atom, a signifi cant event
within itself. It was an advance in science that continues to affect people to
this day. It led to further development that we now see in our everyday
life. The splitting of the atom led to new ways to control the spread of
diseases, to helping us reach new places in space, and helps doctors
everyday with diagnosing patients. The creation of the atomic bomb, the
most destructive bomb ever known to mankind, would not have happened
without the discovery of splitting the atom.
In the US around 1941, there was a top secret project going on, the
Manhattan project. The people working on it were there to help create the
fi rst atomic bomb. During WWII the US had heard that Germany was
creating one. The president at the time received a letter informing him
Germany might be making progress on a new type of weapon. As it was a
time of war it became important that the US had one of their own before
any other country. In order to build a bomb like this, they had to
experiment with new technology they had never used. The importance of
that alone is signifi cant, what came out of it however, had the power to
change many many lives.
The US decided to drop this atomic bomb on Hiroshima after only one
test. The power from the bomb caused destruction and devastation like
nothing anyone had seen before. It shocked everyone involved, and took
many lives in the process. Those who did survive, live with the loss and the
memory of this horrible event. Parents lost children, children lost parents.
Those who survived, saw horrors no human ever wishes to see. Years later
the impact the atomic bomb has made can still be seen in people. The
type of trauma the atomic bomb has caused is something we as human
beings hope to never experience or see again.
Yet we still live with the possibility that an atomic bomb could be dropped
somewhere near us. Since WWII our world has only gained more nuclear
weapons that are more powerful than before. Because this threat still
exists, it has changed how many countries fi ght war. It is a much bigger
decision to declare war against a country, especially if they are in
possession of a nuclear weapon. Today we see countries like Russia and
the US who posses more than one nuclear weapon and pose a greater
threat than other countries.
This shows us that the impact of the atomic bomb went further than the
outcome of the bombings. It
reached out to leaders
of countries
and their
citizens who could be impacted by their decisions
and use of atomic
bombs in the future.
The Manhattan project brought about the creation of the atomic bomb.
Something that was far reaching, and impacted everyone in one way or
another. Our world would look different today without the atomic bomb. It
changed many peoples lives the day it was dropped on Hiroshima, and
continues to change lives today.
