Practice advancing and retreating without crossing
legs. Stutter step.
Entering and clinching.
Practice entering and clinching after parrying a punch,
punching, and feinting a kick or punch.

Katate hazushi ichi - Wrist escape #1.
Escape from a same-side grab
Katate hazushi ni - Wrist escape #2.
Escape from a cross-wrist grab
Ryote hazushi - Escape 2 hands on 2.
Clap hands together and bring them up over one
shoulder as you drive elbows into uke’s chest a bit.
Morote hazushi - Escape 2 hands on 1.
Make a fi st with the trapped hand. Grab it with
the free hand and pull the hand away as you push the elbow of your trapped hand
toward uke.
Momiji hazushi - Red Maple Escape.
Uke grabs your throat with both hands from front.
Clasped hands straight up. No strike needed
Ryoeri hazushi - Double lapel escape.
Airplane escape.
Moroyubi dori - Four fi nger come-along.
This is an attack against the fi ngers. You grab
uke’s hand, same side, by grabbing across the back of the fi ngers. Immediately
torque the hand palm up and crank the fi ngers back. Pull the arm across your
chest and hold it there with the opposite arm, then crank the fi ngers back more to
walk uke where you want him to go.
Throwing techniques
Kuzushi nage - Unbalancing throw.
Heel to heel trip.
O soto gari - Major outer reaping.
Like kuzushi nage, but you rip the leg out instead of
just tripping uke over it.

Ko soto gari - minor outer reaping.
Step in deep with right leg in the middle between
uke’s. Hook around uke’s right leg with your left leg and drive to mount on mat.
Variation: duck uke’s punch and clinch. Drop to R knee between uke’s feet and
circle your L leg around uke’s R leg to pin the leg and force take down to uke’s
rear.
Morote gari - Both hands reaping.
Duck uke’s high attack and drive your shoulder into
his midsection while preventing uke from stepping back by grabbing behind his
knees.
Shime no kata
Eri gatame - lapel hold.
You sit on floor next to uke with R arm around uke’s neck, and
hands clenched. Control uke’s R arm under his L armpit.
Kata gatame - cross shoulder hold.
Very similar to lapel hold, but instead of trapping
uke’s R arm under his armpit, tori pushes the arm across uke’s face and squeezes.
This can also be done up on uke’s R knee. Students should work this from both
sides.
Ichimonji jime - Figure one choke.
Long and short choke.
With your right hand, grasp
deeply uke’s right lapel either overhand or underhand. Pushing your right
forearm across a piece throat, use your left hand on his left lapel to pull his neck
and down into the choke.
Tsukkomi jime - Poking choke.
Arm extended. Hands on the lapels. Can use one, or
both. Can cover one with the other.
Hadaka jime ni - Naked strangle #2.
Naked strangle from the rear with the hands
clenched. Easiest of the hadakas, so I teach it fi rst.
Do shime - Leg scissors on the short ribs.
Uke pulled into your closed guard. Control
the upper body as well.

Hand Techniques
“Y of the hand” escape -
Pull it in close, then straight up
Ude tori - Arm lock.
Standing arm bar, using the elbow strike or face wash to open uke
up.
Momiji hazushi ni -
Spinning escape from 2 handed choke from the front
Kote gaeshi - Wrist overturning.
Side-step the reach, then turn back the other way, rolling
the wrist out and down to take uke to floor.
Nage no kata
Deashi harai - Advancing foot sweep.
Uke steps towards you with R foot. Use your L
foot to sweep uke’s foot to your R. Use hands in steering wheel maneuver to take
uke to the floor.
Soto gama - Outside sickle.
Sickle the forward leg. Teach from a punch.
Uchi gama - Inside sickle.
Teach as kicking sickle to the inside of uke's forward foot.
Ogoshi - Hip throw
Yama arashi - Mountain storm.
Uke punches with R hand while stepping forward with R
foot. Side step the punch, by moving to your R, while you block the punch with
your L hand. Break the collar bone with knife edge strike with R hand. Throw o

soto gari. Drop down to the R knee and slide it under uke’s R shoulder. Break his
R arm across your knee and thigh, while you apply a thrusting choke with the “Y”
of the R hand.
Shime no kata
Sankaku gatame - Leg triangle choke.
Leg triangle from a missed tomoe, or from within
the guard. Block uke’s hips with your L foot. Pull uke in tight. Lay your R leg
across the back of uke’s neck. Hook your R ankle in your L knee. Uke’s R arm
should be through the choke. Apply armbar to that.
Namijuji jime - Normal cross choke.
Fingers in cross choke.
Gyakujuji jime - Reverse cross choke.
Thumbs in cross choke
Hadaka jime ichi - Naked strangle #1.
Naked strangle from the front. Preferable without
uke's arm in the choke.
Hadaka jime san - Naked strangle #3.
Naked stangle from behind, using a fi gure four
arm position.
Ashinada jime - Leg blade constriction.
Tuck uke's R toes in your armpit. Come under
the Achilles with your forearm and crank up on your own wrist with your L hand.
Can be done sitting or standing.

Tora nage - Tiger throw.
Hip throw, done with the R arm around uke’s neck instead of
waist.
O uchi gari - Major inside reaping.
Approach with the L foot towards uke's middle. Slide
your R foot between uke's feet and reap his L foot off the floor with your R leg
while pushing uke back
Tai otoshi - Body drop.
You grab high on uke’s collar with the R hand. Step in toe to toe
with the R foot. Pivot on your R foot to bring your L foot to the outside of uke’s L
foot. Continue pivoting to your L so that you end up facing away from uke with
your R leg in front of uke. As you pull uke forward and down, pop your R leg
straight to take uke off his feet.
Nage no kata
Seoi nage - Shoulder throw.
Classic 1-point shoulder throw, and flying mare variation.
Ushiro goshi - Rear hip.
Counter uke's shoulder throw with L hand at his hips and
pivoting back with the L leg to pull uke down in front of you. Option to reap uke's
R leg by sliding your R leg back between uke's.
Seoi goshi - Cross shoulder throw.
Set up is like hip throw. Keep your R hand on the
lapel, and L hand at his R elbow. As you pivot in, put your R elbow into uke’s R
armpit. Over emphasize hip placement. Use more hip than usual. Pull uke
around like a hip throw.

Tsurikomi goshi - Sleeve throw.
Normal start position. Grasp uke’s L sleeve with your R
hand. Pivot in as in hip throw, but use your grip on uke’s sleeve to force his
kuzushi forward over your hip. Throw like hip throw, letting uke’s sleeve go so he
can slap at the last minute.
Hand techniques
Ushiro momiji hazushi -
Spinning escape from a two-handed choke from behind. Make
sure to step around and past uke, not into uke.
Kata mune tori -
Uke grabs your lapel and punches with the opposite hand. Cover the
grabbing hand. Block at the punching forearm, then quickly claw the eyes and
strike the inner forearm as you pivot away into a wrist flex
Kote maki dori - Coiled up wrist.
For classic version, uke strikes overhead with R hand.
Step in to block with the L forearm and reach under uke’s R arm with your R arm.
Lock the wrist in a tightly flexed position, using uke’s arm to defend against any
punches. Also one-handed from a punch or reach. Grasp across the top of uke’s
reaching R hand. Strike the inside of his R elbow to force the arm bent and
quickly torque the wrist up by uke’s R shoulder, with his elbow based against your
shoulder.
Kata hagai - Single wing choke.
Standing single-wing choke, applied like a standing
version of cross shoulder hold. Parry uke’s R punch with your L hand, as you
enter and reach around uke’s neck and arm with your R arm. Apply the lock, then
pivot to the ground maintaining the choke.
Constriction techniques
Kataha jime - 1/2 nelson and 1/2 gi choke.
Uke punches or reaches with R hand. Parry
with your L hand as you snake your R hand around his arm and behind uke’s
head. Pull uke toward you, applying and half nelson. Appy choke with L hand by
reach around for the lapel and pulling it across the throat.
Ude jime - Arm constriction.
Lay-across armbar with your "head-high" hand at the
wrist.
Arm entangling on the mat - Arm entangling.

variations:
1)
From side mount. Uke counters the armbar by bending at the elbow. Fold it in
closely. Pin the wrist down while raising the elbow.
2)
In guard, uke has his R hand by your hip. Grab his wrist with your L hand. Pivot to
the side and come over his elbow with your R arm, entangling his R arm and
raising it behind his back.

Yonkyu (Blue)
Atemi
Traps -
Combination block and capture with the hands. Emphasize moving the target,
and getting really good at one side. The same trap can be used to either attacking
hand.
Scoops -
Move off the center line and toward uke to scoop the kick from underneath.
Don’t scoop by reach over the leg as it leaves your ribs unprotected.
Rear kick
Roundhouse kick
Crescent kick
Nage no kata
Sasae ashi - Foot stop.
Step back into your right pulling duty forward with his right foot
fi rst. Use your left foot to stop the advance of uke’s right foot as you pull him
forward into a sutemi.
Soto momo harai - Outside thigh sweep.
Set up like hip throw. Sweep back hard with
your R leg through uke’s thigh as you whip him around you.
Uchi momo harai - Inside thigh sweep.
Step in with R foot like hip throw. Kuzushi is
hard up and forward with both your hands. Come in R pec to uke’s L pec. Plant
L foot near inside uke’s L foot. Sweep through the middle with your R leg, taking
uke down.
Harai goshi - Loin and ankle sweep.
Pull uke in tight and across your body as you turn
and sweep the entire R leg and thigh. Hands are high on the lapels or upper back
for this
Hane goshi - Springing hip.
1/2 hip throw. Keep uke in tight to your R hip. Lean away
and let uke fall off toward the front.
Kane sute - Rooster art.
Teach from a punch. Enter like setting up for side thrust kick. L
leg to the upper belly and R leg behind the thighs. Torque uke to the floor.
Uki otoshi - Floating drop.
As uke steps forward, drop down into position with your L
knee back and down and your R leg in front of uke's legs. Pull him forward into a
sutemi
Maki komi - Winding throw.
Usual starting position. Slide your R hand over uke’s
shoulder all the way to your armpit. Pivot to L like for shoulder throw, bringing

uke with you as you turn. Put your R leg back and past uke’s ankle. Swing your R
hand down past the floor and roll onto your R side, bringing uke with you as you
do. Uke lands under you. Apply armbar to uke’s R arm from that position.
Tomoe nage - Circle throw.
Put one foot in the crook of uke’s hip. Sit deep between uke’s
legs and throw him over you. Can throw into a roll out, or sutemi ending.
Yawara
Emon tori - Defense against a chest push.
Uke pushes with one or two hands to your
chest. Grab uke’s wrist from underneath with your R hand and over the top of his
fi ngers with your L hand. Crank his fi ngers back and down to take uke face down
to the floor.
Tekubi tori ichi - Quick break from an outside wrist grab.
Uke grabs your L wrist with his
R hand. Palm up, palm up! Roll your L hand palm up in front of you to create a
gap over the meat of his thumb. Grab that area with your R hand palm up as
well. Pry the hand off, and crank it straight down toward the floor, reinforcing
with your L hand.
Tekubi tori ni - Quick break from a cross wrist grab.
Uke grabs your R wrist with his R
hand. Palm forward, palm forward! Roll your R hand palm forward, exposing
the meat of his thumb. Grab that area with your L hand and roll your R wrist
forward onto uke’s hand to roll it over and toward the floor.
Ryoeri tori - double lapel torture hold.
Uke grabs both of your lapels. Strike back of
uke’s L hand to discard it. Reach over the R hand to apply hand hold number four
on uke’s R hand.
Kubi nuki jime - Counter head lock.
Reaching over the shoulder to the nose.
Hagai jime - Jujitsu full-nelson.
Cross wrists behind uke’s neck.
Constriction techniques
Gyakute gatame - Reverse hand hold on the mat.
Apply just like lapel hold, except for
hand position. Use your L hand to grab uke’s R hand across the back of the hand
and over the base of the thumb. Crank uke’s hand back as in kote gaeshi, and
raise your hips and R knee to hook uke’s hand and trap it. Apply pressure by
pulling the hand away from uke’s upper body.
Armbar on the mat -

1)
You’re on your back with uke kneeling to your right trying to choke with both hands.

Get the usual grip on uke’s right arm. Bring your right knee up to prevent the
mount. Bridge up on your left foot and shift your hips away to end up on your
right side. Swing the right knee all the way into uke’s gut so that your right foot is
against his right side. Swing your left foot high overhead and bring it in across
uke’s left neck. Roll uke to floor maintaining the arm bar.
2)
Start in guard. Hang on to uke’s R hand c your L, and onto his R elbow c your R hand.
Place your L foot on uke’s R hip. Swivel your shoulders to the R by pushing away
against uke’s R hip and swinging your R leg up high. This should put you at about
a 90
o
angle to uke. Then swing your L leg up and over uke’s head to fi nish the
armbar. Keep uke in close. Roll him to the floor if need be.
Lapel choke from side mount -
Side mount to uke's right. Slide your R hand under uke's
shoulder to get as deep a grab as possible at uke's right shoulder. Keeping your
left elbow above uke's head, grasp his L lapel in your L hand. Suddenly swing the
L arm over his face into choking position and pull with the R hand to taught the
lapel.
Arm triangle chokes
from mount and guard - R hand at uke’s left lapel. L arm around
head or neck to R elbow.
Combination techniques
Gyaku ude hayanada -
Reverse arm entangling.
Ulna press to the floor. Hang onto uke’s
R wrist with both of your hands. Step over uke’s elbow and wrap your leg around
his straight arm. Sit down upon it and pull up on the arm to break it. Judo roll
out.
Ushiro daki nage - Counter rear bear-hug, arms pinned.
Shift hips and strike to the groin,
then throw flying mare.
